"Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. We all have mental health. Our mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also impacts on how we cope, interact and form relationships with others, as well as our daily functioning." NHS.
Promoting Mental Health Awareness within the Security Industry
From VIP protection, to working the doors, from guarding a building, to CCTV surveillance, it is undeniable that the security industry can often be a very challenging and stressful place to work. And so therefore, while currently not a compulsory requirement for SIA licencing, Safer Minds
believes everyone working in the security industry - no matter what the role - should at least have some form of basic mental health awareness training.
There are so many positive advantages with having an industry where the majority of its workforce are mental health aware! To get everyone in the security sector mental health aware is undoubtedly a challenging and pioneering ambition, yet completely attainable. Together, we can get most of the workforce within the industry mental health aware. So if you are an employer passionate about promoting positive mental health and developing mental health awareness, then please consider these two options:
Give a copy of our booklet Mental Health Awareness for the Security Industry to every member of your team. This is a great way of getting your team to understand the basics of mental health and how to spot mental health issues, as well as an overview of supporting someone (friend / family / colleague / customer) in crisis or distress.
Hold Mental Health Awareness for the Security workshops. Based on the content of the booklet, this workshop is a bit more detailed than the booklet, plus - more importantly - it gives attendees an opportunity to ask questions about mental health, and discuss mental health issues.
The number of 'active' SIA licences has topped half a million, according to the February 2025 statistics placed on the SIA website by the Security Industry Authority.
A mentally healthy workplace is a productive
and creative workplace
"Employers have a responsibility to create a positive, healthy workplace culture that helps all their employees recognise mental health and wellbeing as critical issues. Employers play a crucial role in promoting employee mental health and wellbeing, and in giving them enough knowledge and skills to mentally support both themselves, as well as their team members, their customers, their friends and their family." Robin Barratt.
"The importance of receiving mental health support is the key to helping a person avoid a life of suffering."
